Plenty of Tex-Mex, mouthwatering barbeque and some of the best chicken-fried steak around put Oklahoma City on the culinary map for hearty appetites, and that’s only for starters. The Meridian Strip and Northwest Expressway corridor, combined with Western Avenue’s restaurant row provide extensive dining options in other cuisines as well, and historic Bricktown, just east of downtown, adds nightlife to boot. Cattlemen’s Steakhouse, won in a craps game in 1945 and among the state’s oldest eateries, continues as a winner with a menu boasting catfish to lamb fries (don’t ask, just enjoy). Deep Fork Grill, serving certified Angus beef, also boasts of fresh seafood cooked over open flames. Bricktown Brewery, the state’s first brewpub, is always hopping. Barbeque lovers head to Earl’s Rib Palace, while gourmet Mexican fans head for the Iguana Café. Big portions at low prices are a trademark at Zio’s Italian Kitchen, whereas the Metro Wine Bar & Bistro is known for upscale fare and more than two dozen wines by the glass. Noted Chef Kurt Fleischfresser’s inventive cuisine reigns at the Coach House, and Mickey Mantle’s Steakhouse displays awards and memorabilia heralding the baseball great to accompany prime steaks and lobster. The 501 Ranch Steak House combines elegant décor with cowboy-sized cuts of beef with a wine cellar of more than 1,000 vintages.
